As we prepare to welcome a new year, many of us start brainstorming our New Year’s resolutions. We promise ourselves we’ll work out daily, eat healthier, or finally take up that hobby we’ve been putting off. But let’s be honest—how often do these resolutions actually stick?
For me, the answer has often been not long enough. That’s why I’m doing things differently this year. Instead of making vague resolutions, I’m setting clear, actionable yearly goals—and sharing them here on this blog.
The problem with resolutions is that they tend to be too broad and overly ambitious. We dive in with enthusiasm, only to lose steam a few weeks later. Goals, on the other hand, provide structure and direction. They’re specific, measurable, and flexible, which makes them far easier to achieve.
For example, instead of saying, “I want to get fit,” a yearly goal might be, “I’ll run a 5K by July.” Breaking this into smaller monthly or weekly milestones—like training three times a week or increasing distance gradually—makes it feel achievable.
Here’s how I’m planning to make this work:
Reflect on the Past Year
Before setting new goals, I’m taking time to reflect on what went well this year and where I struggled. It’s a great way to celebrate progress while identifying areas for growth.
Set SMART Goals
I’m making sure my goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Whether it’s personal growth, career advancement, or health, every goal will have a clear purpose and timeline.
Break It Down
Big goals can feel overwhelming, so I’m breaking them into smaller steps. I’ll create quarterly or monthly milestones to track progress and stay motivated.
Share Progress
This blog will be my accountability partner. I’ll share updates about what’s working, what’s challenging, and any adjustments I make along the way.
If you’ve struggled to stick to resolutions in the past, I encourage you to try this approach. Swap out those sweeping promises for thoughtful yearly goals that align with your passions and values. Writing them down—whether in a private journal or a public blog—makes them feel more real and keeps you accountable.
Here’s to a year of purpose, progress, and possibilities! Let’s make 2024 the year we achieve more by planning better.
What goals are you setting for the new year? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
